Mascara: a cosmetic for darkening and thickening the eyelashes.
"I put on my blue army bandanna in the bathroom along with my mascara, eyeliner and lip-gloss."

Although mascara has a recent history of excisting (especially in comparison with for instance lipstick or eyeshadow), one can never deny its significant position in the beauty scene.

I myself have got a pair of lashes, or better said eyes that are easily "upset". So it has been quite the task to find some mascara that makes my lashes look good AND my eyes pleased. I've found this combo in the mascaras from Chanel. Although I'm a bit bias towards the big CC's (I mean it's one of the -if not the- best brands that has ever excisted), their products are always of high quality. And if it doesn't make my eyes pop out of my skull, I'm happy as ever.*

Now I must confess that everything has, as everything always does, their limits. So I thought it could be helpful for those considering buying a Chanel mascara to know my experience with them (because, ya know, I'm a non-expert bias typer who likes to be heard. PLEASE LOOK AT ME KARL!).

I've so far tried three of their mascaras Inimitable, Inimitable Intense and Le Volume de Chanel.

Inimitable
(waterproof)

My very first Chanel mascara was a birthday present from my lovely parents. It's waterproof (which is with constantly irritated and teary eyes a blessing). I can still vividly remember how impressed I was with the blackness of black Chanel #10 Noir is (and for that aspect all of the Chanel mascaras are). However, the big downside for me was that gradually, when the day continued to unfold, it would deposit some of the mascara onto the eye socket. Giving you an obvious smudged line above your eyelid. However, this didn't withhold me to purchasing it again for quite some time.

Inimitable Intense

After purchasing the Inimitable over and over again, I got a little sample of this mascara. The regular Inimitable began to irritate my surrounding eye-skin (as it always spontaneous does with some products after a while) so I was looking for something new. Now I'd also tried the well-known YSL Shocking mascara, but found the consistency to droopy and it made my eyes burn very much (and something I haven't told y'all yet, I'm very bad at doing my makeup. So everything that has a potential to sort of drool all over my face is very hazardous and just waiting to go wrong). However, I've seen it on many girls and it looked very nice.

Alright, lets go on with the Inimitable Intense. The consistency in comparison with the regular one is a bit more droopy, but not too much. It makes your lashes look more curled and, well, covered in mascara. It gives your lashes indeed more volume (but not as much as the next one). They unfortunately don't have a waterproof version of the Intense, so the major downside for me was that when my eyes got irritated and teary, my mascara left the stage. Which made them even more irritated and teary, making everything pour down my face. Now this image sounds horrific, especially to me, but the pouring down my face isn't the classic Hollywood dripping of your chin- kind of action, but more centered around the eyes. Which is sort of a good thing, I guess. So when it drips it doesn't do it over-dramatically and you might just can get away with it by saying it's "heroin-chic".

Le Volume de Chanel
(waterproof)

More dramatic than the Intense, but in a good way. This one I've got for about a month now and must say is my personal favourite. It's waterproof again, so I can cry as much as I want to. It doesn't crease like the Inimitable, but then again is more difficult to remove from your face. I've lost a lash or two for scrubbing too hard. It does its name true, and yeah, I love my lashes to be there obviously in your face as if they've been descendant from Twiggy. And they sort of do in a non-fake lash kind of way. Also the application brush is different from the other two, making the lashes more separated/standing out. Which naturally helps to conceive those 60's lashes all over again.

I hope that this was in any way helpful or in some other way atleast a bit entertaining. I felt a bit weird typing all this out because I'm not even close of being an expert on anything, but I know what I like and I know what's important to me. And it isn't like rocket science or anything (don't let those ads fool ya!).

Love,
Dominique

*Why Chanel: As y'all might know I'm sort of obsessed with Chanel. However, my allergies/sensitivity don't care about the esthetic and rich history of the brand. Besides loving Chanel, I'm also just a general high-end lover and have tried other kinds of mascara from similar high-end brands (in sample formation that is, those prices are too high to "just experiment with". The same is like with those peolpe who sell their high-end clothes or something just a year after the release of it. I mean, not judging or anything, but if you're willing to pay that much money for something that precious, you ought to make it a carefully considered purchase. But that's just my opinion... Got loads of them).

Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
Me pride and joy
If I didn't having me sewing machine
I'd a married James McCoy
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And that's the end of Jim
'Cause by night I get so weary I don't even look good to him
-Excerpt from the opening scene from a 40s musical starring Betty Hutton-

It's Saturday morning around 9 o'clock. I'm still laying in bed, drooling upon my pillow and dreaming about Shaun Evans. Then all of a sudden I hear my mum yell my name, summoning me downstairs. I turn around and mumble something understandibly. Not long after, my sister yells my name again with the instructions of me needing to go downstairs. So there was not much left for me to do than to get out of bed and go downstairs. While I'm slowly tumbling down the stairs, I can hear my mum being all excited. "What's the fuss about?", I recall thinking.

Finally arrived downstairs (there are indeed some downsides by having your room up in the attic), I see my mum gloating and be all giddy. "Yes?" I ask half asleep. She points at a big box standing in the middle of the kitchen. I nod. "Yes?". She smiles at me, "We've won a sewing machine". Silence. "Sorry, what?". She repeats what she'd said, "Look at the box".

Apparently, without me knowing it, my mum had entered a compitition to win one of 45 sewing machines. 45 being the number of years this magazine, Knipmode, has excisted and thus celebrates it with giving away free sewing machines. And we've won one! I never ever win something nor does my mum. So we were well surprised when we actually did win something. A sewing machine, for gracious sake! So, ya know, THANKS A LOT!!

For entering you had to say why you should be the one to get a free sewing machine. My mum wrote to them that we both use the same sewing machine to well sew our stuff, and that when I move out it would be nice if I had one for myself to take with me. Which is indeed very sweet of her, but also sorry, when do you think I'll be moving out then? Am I already in need to find my own place? Let alone a job??? I don't have a job. How am I supposed to support myself?? She said not to worry about it. However, it's become painstakingly clear that I've become that age where it's normal to move out. Or have a job. Basically, I'm old.

The sewing machine is a basic one from Toyota. It does what it has to do and I love the retro vibes going on there with the purple flowers and the round shaping and I'm just very happy with it! If only I'd some spare time so I could do a proper run down... *sigh* You can't always get what you want. Or atleast not all at the same time. Besides, having it is step 1 in the process. Step 2 will follow gradually. ;)

So yeah, once again, thank you very very much people down there at Knipmode! I appreciate it a lot and I'll be bobbin and peddling on it soon!

Love,
Dominique

On Monday I wore a top I got from my aunts friend (only she's removed the tag so...), stripy trousers made by me, leather jacket from Only, socks from Primark, shoes from H&M and hat from an antiquities market in Belgium (the hat is French, though).

This week has just been filled with almost nothing but schoolwork. Boring schoolwork which stresses everyone out and gives you bad skin and a shorter life span due to unnecessary stress. Just keep reminding yourself that learning isn't the bad guy. My best advice would be: turn up the music and move those hips! Shakira Shakira!

On Tuesday I wore a top from the husband of my aunts friend, leather trousers from Toxik, leather jacket from Only, socks from Primark, shoes from H&M, rings were a gift from my aunt (different aunt), and bracelet from Fashionology. Also got attacked by this tree:

"Rock and roll music, if you like it, if you feel it, you can't help but move to it. That's what happens to me. I can't help it". -Elvis Presley

On Wednesday I wore a dress from See by Chloe, Jacket from Vanilia, fedora hat from Primark, socks and shoes from H&M, brooch from (?). Also Hello Kitty mirror from H&M (sadly no longer with us -I've dropped it on the floor) and lipstick by Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet #34 La Raffinée.

Today I grooved around the premises of Rijksmuseum. Above are some pictures I took in a hurry (too busy looking at old furniture and stuff. That's how I roll). That blurry picture with a painting on it is the Nightwatch from Rembrandt. Just so you know...

On Thursday I wore a tshirt with James Dean on it from Action (not pictured) and pyjama bottoms from Hema.

On Friday I wore a blue strapless dress from Bynamesakke, black see through dress and shoes from H&M, socks primark, hat from an antiquities shop, rings were a gift from my aunt and bracelet from Lucardi. Also Chanel perfume Coco Mademoiselle, Le Volume de Chanel mascara, Yves Saint Laurent lipstick in Rouge Volupté #01AB (I think. idk. It's pink), sunglasses from (?) and Hello Kitty mirror from Mfashion.

On Saturday I wore a dress, shoes AND hat from H&M, bag from Charity Shop, socks from Heart E via Mfashion, ring with ears is from somewhere in Germany and ring without ears was a gift from my aunt and I've topped it all with my Chanel sunglesses.

Another Saturday, another thrifting day... I loved how this thrift store had nailed old tins to the wall and hung necklaces on it. Quite initiative, non? I especially love the one with the dogs and cats on it. They'd also covered parts of the walls with old lp covers. Groovy.

On Sunday I wore pretty much the same as Thursday, only with greasy hair and other bad hygene (so no picture included). I did walk the dog today and had the decency to brush my hair, put a hat on and trade my pyjama bottoms for some mint blue shorts. I'm thinking about wearing them tomorrow. So keep your eyes peeled for that next week! Nice cliffhanger. That'll keep you coming back. Did she or didn't she wore those mint blue shorts on Monday? At this point quite uncertain, but next week baby, next week *starts dancing to the flamenco*.

Love,
Dominique
