What's On Show? II

The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.
Michelangelo

Another season, another wishlist of exhibitions I want to visit. In no particular order...

Ode aan de Nederlandse Mode
(Ode to Dutch Fashion)
19 September 2015 - 7 Febuary 2016

Viktor & Rolf, Iris van Herpen, Jan Taminiau and many many more are to be featured in this exhibition celebrating Dutch design. National couturiers with international allures gets to be featured from 1900-2015 in more than a hundred creations (!!). Creativity is the center point of this exhibition. There are so many great names from the low lands and there are so many amazing, diversified designs featured (from the low lands. Not trying to sound too patriotic). A real treat for the eye!

Steken in de Ruimte
(Stitches in Space)
4 October 2015 - 7 February 2016

Fine Arts professional Ans Verdijk is fascinated by space and the ongoing business of moving, replacing, including, rejecting and re-arranging 'valuables'. What this means? I don't know. These valuables apparently reminds us of fashion and jewelry, but only in the sense of something special to add to a body. Ans has made a selection that doesn't decorate, but gives the material a new life. Still don't know. Sounds fascinating, though.

David Bowie is
11 December 2015 - 13 March 2016

We all now the name David Bowie. If not, well, you've been missing out on a lot of stuff... Anyway, David Bowie is is an exhibition where more than 300 objects from mr. Bowie himself are on show. Think handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photography, original album designs and some 'rare material' all thrifted together in these last couple of 50 years. All together. All to be seen. The exhibition will not only show you the influence David (I may call him David) has had on the world, but also how the world has influenced David in return.

This exhibition has been on tour since 2013 from London to Toronto, Sao Paulo, Chicago, Paris, Melbourne and now Groningen! I admit it isn't an as catchy or universally easy city-name to pronounce, but I've got my hopes up that soon everybody is talking about Groningen (or any variations they come up with to pronounce it).

Breien!
(Knitting!)
17 October 2015 - 28 August 2016

If there must be one exhibition I have had to visit this year (or the next. But for dramatic purposes lets say this year) it must be this exhibition. I mean, knitting. It's all in there! From historical patterns to the newest designs, from traditional 'Friese floddermutsen' (a kind of Friesian cap) to 50's retro knits and colourful 80's jumpers. Just... everything. And I want to see it. Now.

Gevaar & Schoonheid: Turner en de traditie van het sublieme
(Danger & Beauty: Turner and the tradition of the sublime)
5 September 2015 - 3 January 2016

The 18th century philosopher Edmund Burke has described 'the sublime' as an experience of intense emotions which could be retrieved by ultimate beauty, but also by threat and danger. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), to call him by his full name, has been in search of this sublime until the day he died. By experiencing different kinds of sensations (by for instance submitting himself to harxh trips on the sea or by visiting abandoned ruins and stunning waterfalls) he tried to captivate the sublime of it. He was immensely captivated by the four elements (so earth, wind, fire and water). These natural forces, Turner said, are the key to reproduce a personally experienced sublime moment. If that doesn't sound intriguing...
